Graham Loper![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [artist statement] As we become a more homogeneous society, local dialects, traditions, and cultural individuality disappear. The struggle to preserve history and identity has come to the forefront of my art. These paintings address over–development, mortality, destruction, paradise, and decay. By employing the principle of genius of place, the notion that painting should always be adapted to the distinctive qualities of a location, I seek to construct paintings that embody the uniqueness of my subjects. I counter claims of progress with expressions of nature, imagination, and reflection. © 2009 Graham Loper [resume] EDUCATION The University of New Hampshire, MFA Studio Art, Durham, NH, 2007-2009 Maryland Institute College of Art, BFA Painting, Baltimore, MD, 2002-2006 The Glasgow School of Art, BFA Painting, Glasgow Scotland, Fall 2004 SOLO EXHIBITIONS “Towards Zero” (upcoming, catalogue) DRWR Gallery Brooklyn, NY December 2009 “Dough and Dynamite”(upcoming) Heitmann [atelier & gallery] Lancaster, PA August 2009 “MFA Degree Exhibition” UNH Museum of Art, Durham, NH May 9, 2009 – May 23, 2009 “The Death of The Belsnickle” Susquehanna Art Museum Harrisburg, PA January 19, 2009 – February 19, 2009 “Views of Scotland and Lancaster, PA” Meyerhoff Gallery Baltimore, MD Nov. 14, 2005 – December 9, 2005 SELECTED GROUP EXHIBITIONS “Boston Young Contemporaries,” 808 Gallery: Boston University, Boston, MA.
